From the Renaissance to modern times, past painters have much to teach us about all aspects of art. Through a combination of art history and painting exercises, this intensive workshop explores the techniques and approaches of the four master painters Giotto, Chardin, Cezanne, and Richard Diebenkorn. Focusing on their use of composition, color and narrative, students will explore the lives and work of these masters, and the many painters who were influenced by them. The class will center around slide-talks, in-class exercises, demonstrations, and at-home paintings (allow two hours minimum for home exercises.) Students will leave the workshop with new understanding of these ground-breaking artists and new skills to apply to their own painting.

Mediums: Watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil.

Levels: Intermediate to advanced.

Our workshop will include:

Zoom classes with slide lectures, critiques and demonstrations.

Daily Painting assignments that students work on independently between Zoom meetings. Assignments are photographed by students and returned to Susan for individual comments and suggestions.

A virtual classroom for sharing paintings, thoughts, instructional videos, and instructor’s critiques.

Students can consult with Susan by email or phone with any questions between Zoom meetings.
